In my previous blog post, I discussed the link between memory and our sense of self. You might wonder why this is important.
A key aspect of studying SPoR, (Social Psychology of Risk) is self-knowledge. We know that 80% of Fortune 500 companies use personality tests for employee coaching and development. However, these tools are rarely used beyond the initial training session.
Think about it: Have you ever seen personality assessments like Insights, D.I.S.C, The Four Dichotomies, or TypeCoach Verifier used in performance reviews or discussed with managers to understand individual strengths and opportunities? Many of these tools are based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the most popular personality assessment globally, inspired by Carl Jung’s Psychological Types book.
These tools offer a starting point for self-discovery. Through SPoR, we delve deeper into our ontology (our understanding of being), sensemaking, worldviews, morals, and ethics, building a more complete picture of ourselves.
Aristotle said, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.”
Western society values intelligence and S.T.E.M knowledge, often focusing on the brain. However, we are not simply the sum of our inputs, nor are we programmed to process information. Instead, our brains engage in constant dialogue with our bodies, and we make less than 5% of our daily decisions consciously.
As Guy Claxton states, “The processes of mind and body are so intricately interwoven that, should we neglect any part of them, we automatically become less intelligent.”
Embodied learning, tacit knowledge, and sensemaking apply to both ourselves and others. To truly help others, we must first understand ourselves. This journey begins with looking inward.
The first step anyone can take on this inward-looking journey is research, can you find anything out there that even comes close to the concepts, presented here?
The Second step, Leaders, Risk Managers, Site supervisors, Operations, Security, HR, and Business managers can take is register for the Houston TX introduction to Risk Intelligence.
