SPoR International Convention 13-17 May 2024 – Canberra

It’s still not too late to register for this engaging, educative and innovative event.

If you want to learn about SPoR and what people from across the globe and Australia are doing in SPoR then, this event is for you. The event will be particularly helpful for people looking for innovative methods (https://www.humandymensions.com/product/spor-and-semiotics/)  in tackling risk that work (https://www.humandymensions.com/product/it-works-a-new-approach-to-risk-and-safety-book-for-free-download/) .

The following are keynote presenters:

  • Dr Nippin Anand (all attendees will receive a copy of his first book ‘Are We Learning from Accidents?’, hot off the press) (UK)
  • Rosa Carrillo (Author of ‘OHS Voices From the Resistance’) (USA)
  • Dr Pedro Ferreira (Portugal)
  • Frank Garrett (Canada)
  • John Sherban (Canada)
  • Dr Craig Ashhurst (Canberra)
  • Billy Snead (USA)
  • Dr Rob Long (Canberra)
  • Gabrielle Carlton (Canberra)

There are also many attendees from New Zealand and across Australia.

The focus of the convention is on Personhood (Module 1) and Resilience and Risk (Module 2). The Wednesday between both Workshops days is on a special guided Semiotic Walk with Dr Long to the Australian Geoscience Centre, The National Film and Sound Archives, The Shine Dome and Sri Vishnu Shiva Mandir followed by a Convention dinner. If you want to learn about semiotics, this is a day not to miss.

As well as key presenters, everyone at the workshops will be given time to present a short vignette on what they are doing in their work with risk. Attendees represent a broad range of interests across most industries including: construction, manufacturing, logistics, education, oil and gas, power industries, heavy industry, mining, forestry, government and community work.

Special Comment

The more the Safety industry directs itself to ‘psychosocial hazards’ the more it becomes clear that the industry needs leadership in Personhood and Resilience (https://www.humandymensions.com/product/everyday-social-resilience-being-in-risk/). Indeed, there is so little discourse associated with these two vital issues in the safety industry it is shocking. There is no mention of Personhood or Resilience in any of the literature on Psychosocial Hazards! One would think both were essential to any understanding of harm though mental health or psychosocial injury? Apparently not!

For anyone interested in Psychosocial Health then this Convention is for you.
