No Reckoning for Zero – SafetyRisk.net

I watched Mission Impossible, The Final Reckoning last night and was not surprised about the repeated use of the words ‘in the blink of an eye’. As the film reached its many crescendos, this phrase, metaphor, idiom and mantra was repeated, just in case the audience forgot its apocalyptic significance.

Technically, the blink of an eye lasts a tenth of a second.

The phrase ‘In the blink of an eye’ comes from 1 Corinthians 15:52 where the Apostle Paul speaks symbolically of the final day, when a trumpet will blast and the dead will be raised. Its context is apocalyptic and offers hope of a day when death itself will be ended. This passage of the Bible is sometimes read out at funerals. Regardless of one’s faith, this idiom has always been identified with the speed of change and death.

It is not surprising then that the Safety-Zero cult (https://safetyrisk.net/how-to-escape-the-safetyzero-cult/ ) should make a video clip of the same name ‘In the Blink of an Eye’ (https://youtu.be/BIhgJ93t0Jw?si=D_nRxU-N32Hjxmt-). The clip was released 5 years ago and symbolizes just how crazy the zero cult is. It is also not surprising that this video is also named ‘The Spirit of Zero’ (https://safetyrisk.net/the-spirit-of-zero/). Both titles bring together the religious intensity of this cult.

Of course, believing in zero requires an act of faith and a denial of fallibility. Yet, every time Safety has come together for a congress each year since 2017, it calls its congress a ‘zero event’ (https://safetyrisk.net/the-global-zero-event-this-is-safety/).

However, as in all things safety one states what is by what it isn’t.

Once one commits in faith to the ideology of zero (https://www.humandymensions.com/product/zero-the-great-safety-delusion/) it then becomes nearly impossible to remove. Indeed, when the safety science lab declares zero a moral goal (https://safetyrisk.net/zero-is-not-noble-moral-or-sense-able/) you realise that such an institution has little interest in ethics or science. Any declaration of a goal that brutalises persons demonstrates that the source has no idea on ethics or morality. Zero is neither moral, noble or sense-able (https://safetyrisk.net/zero-is-not-noble-moral-or-sense-able/). Safety differently indeed. Punk Rock Safety.

I wonder how many zero vision advocates have actually watched the clip ‘In the Blink of an Eye’? Would any have any idea just how cultic, religious and visionless it is? What has Safety to do with the apocalypse? Why is Safety so anchored to this absurd ideology? Ah, of course, it all goes back to Heinrich, the insurance salesman, who invented the nonsense idea that injury rates define safety. No wonder the non-safety non-science lab endorses zero as a moral goal! When Safety defines itself by injury rates, the only ideology that remains is Zero.

If you want to know just how destructive, dehumanising and harmful this ideology is then you can read any of these:
