Culture Cloud Tour part 12 – Slogans

Slogans dominate the landscape of business and Safety.

Think of the most popular slogans

  • It’s finger lickin’ good – KFC
  • Say it with flowers – FTD (Interflora)
  • Have a break, have a Kit-Kat
  • Snap, Crackle, Pop – Rice Bubbles
  • Just do it – Nike
  • Zero Harm – no claimants

There is a framing and anchoring to Power behind these statement, and none more so than in Risk and Safety.

Downer EDI; Zero Harm symbol

When you look at slogans like this, an absolute, a guarantee, an impossible goal, and the get faced with the realities like this

‘Downer operates in some sectors that are exposed to high-risk activities and remains steadfastly committed to Zero Harm. Protecting our people, communities and the environment is Downer’s number one priority. Tragically, three workplace fatalities occurred in Downer’s operations during the year. Our Board and management have extended their deepest condolences to the families colleagues and employers of the workers involved, and we have provided support following these incidents. We are committed to continuous improvement of our systems and processes including our focus on critical controls’  https://www.downergroup.com/Content/cms/media/2024/PDFs/FY24_ASX_Announcement.pdf

Three fatalities is in total contrast to the espoused value of Zero Harm, and hold little to no consolation for the family and friends of the deceased workers.

What other Safety slogans are prevailing?

  • Safety is a choice you make
  • Safety First
  • All accidents are preventable

These slogans can lead to demonising the person involved to make the company look good and to shift blame.
