1500 Blogs on Risk and Safety in The Social Psychology of Risk

Recently I ticked over 1500 blogs on https://safetyrisk.net/. Little did I know that when I started these blogs or my first book, I would be providing a real difference to those who know that traditional safety (S1 and Not-so-Differently) don’t work.

When I first started writing blogs, I knew that Safety didn’t understand its own methodology and soon realised that no matter what name given to traditional safety such as differently, S2, ‘new view’ or HOP, it’s all just the same. Without a well-articulated methodology there is no method, just slogans, wishes and aspirations. It doesn’t long once on this journey that some new slogan has to be invented under the mask of innovation but in the end is just more behaviourism, Technique, measurement of performance and systems.

No matter what slogans, mantras or wishes one has in safety, the most important question is: OK, now, so what do I do?

Most often, even when some claim to be ‘different’ state they have methods, they don’t.

Doing should involve movement away from traditional methods. Innovation should be about innovation. Creativity ought to be about being creative. But if the push remains on measurement, systems and performance, there is nothing different. This is what safety does.

So, once the fanfare has subsided, the entertainment is over and people return to the workplace it still remains: counting injury rates, PPE, policing regulations and paperwork.

In SPoR, this is not the case and we have been presenting this difference for many years including case studies of how SPoR works: https://www.humandymensions.com/product/it-works-a-new-approach-to-risk-and-safety-book-for-free-download/

For many years it has been clear that SPoR is focused on a different ethic, methodology and methods (https://www.humandymensions.com/product/spor-and-semiotics/). Most of what is available too is not about making money off the back of a slogan or entertainment but involves longitudinal learning attached to a comprehensive curriculum (https://cllr.com.au/register-to-study/). Becoming proficient and intuitive in SPoR takes years of learning.

Searching the Blogs

If you want to know more about SPoR as an alternative to what’s about in safety, you can download any of the free resources (books, videos, posters, papers etc) and you can also search box on this blog site or scroll through my blogs : https://safetyrisk.net/robert-long/

There is also a free introductory module in SPoR if one wants to make a start, just email me here: rob@spor.com.au and I will send you the link.

1 Million Downloads

We are also nearing the mark of 1 million downloads of SPoR books and resources. We’ll let you know when that milestone comes.

What all this shows is that SPoR is booming in the subversive space and in the background of Safety that clearly has no interests in shifting a brick in the fortress or debating the merits of SPoR.

More people and organisations are doing SPoR and reaping the benefits of a real different ethic and methodology in tackling risk.
