Read Everything! – SafetyRisk.net

I was talking to a friend of mine who is a teacher in a primary school about a FB post trend of putting up all the books people have read in the past year.

Not the Teacher’s reading list.

In her current role, literacy is part of her job and luckily part of her passion. But she lamented to me that she never has time to read, and in fact had only read 25 books last year that were outside of teaching duties.

So, when I have a look at the Risk and Safety industry, what are we reading, what are we listening to, and what knowledge are we taking in from outside of our central duties?

And who are we discussing this with?

I came across this clip from Ray Bradbury today. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=855004867087514 in which he challenges people to read one Poem, one Short Story and one Essay, which has been dubbed the ‘Bradbury Trio’ . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Bradbury

His idea, as you can see in the short clip, ‘at the end of 1000days, think of the stuff that will be in your head! My God, the metaphors that will be crammed in there. The ideas from Science, from Philosophy, from Art, from all over the place. I want you to be madly in love with ideas on all kinds of levels. So, your life will be continually exciting.’

What an exciting idea!

I have now committed to reading one book a week for the entire year. I am making sure I select a variety of stuff to keep me engaged and motivated. It will not all be about Risk and Safety. And there will be poetry, and I will struggle and be confused and need to discuss things with people and friends to help formulate opinions and theories and does it apply to me and a million other things that bounce around in my head.

But for me to do this it needs to be a Social activity, which is much more joyous that doing it alone.

So, commencing 6:00pm Adelaide time, February 17th, 2026, I am starting a Book Club, with a book that I know intimately Risk Makes Sense by Dr Rob Long. We will meet every Tuesday for 8 weeks via Zoom and use iCue Engagement mapping to answer people’s questions. We will take the 3rd of March off as I am holding SEEK (Social psychology Event Exploration Knowledge) in Brisbane.

If you cannot make every session, don’t worry, we will record the session so you don’t miss out. It is meant to be enjoyable not a burden. A great learning experience will be had by all.
